Troy Aikman: Johnny Manziel has chance for 'special career'

Legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman isn’t much of an NFL scout, but the signal-caller knows greatness when he sees it, and he believes Johnny Manziel has all the tools needed to succeed in the NFL.

Aikman, speaking to DallasCowboys.com, was asked about the Texas A&M product and couldn’t help but gush over Manziel, giving him a glowing review.

“I’m a fan of his, and I’m really pulling for him,” Aikman said. “I had a chance to meet him at the Final Four, and I saw some of his workout from television. I wasn’t in Houston for the workout, but I think he’s got an opportunity to really have a special career, and I’ll be pulling for that to happen.”

Chad Johnson signs deal with Montreal Alouettes of CFL

The last time we saw Chad Johnson on a professional football field was back in 2012 when he was embarrassingly released by the Miami Dolphins during their stint on HBO’s Hard Knocks.

It was a swift fall from grace for Johnson, 36, who just a few seasons earlier was representing the Cincinnati Bengals in the Pro Bowl. Johnson has since been determined to return to the gridiron and has apparently done so as the man formerly known as Chad Ochocinco has signed with the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Crash Landing for New Jet

After getting released by the Titans and then sittingon the open market for two weeks, Chris Johnson finally found a new team. In New York he’ll likely be taking handoffs from fellow offseason pickup Michael Vick, forming football’s most terrifying backfield if this were 2010.

With the steady Bilal Powell and the explosive Chris Ivory also on the depth chart, Johnson should expect no more than 12-15 touches a week. That mightseem like a fall from grace for a 28-year-old who has topped 1,000 yards rushing in all six seasons since being drafted with the 24th overall pick in 2008. But Johnson has been tilting away from superstarstatusfor awhile.

Did you know it was almost five years ago that Johnson had his 2,000-yard campaign? Since adding a “CJ2K” tattoo, Johnson has averaged 73.9 yards per game (1,183 per season). Those aren’t numbers of a pedestrian player, but they aren’t…

If ever there was a playoff game where both teams could say they got what they needed, Anaheim’s 4-3 win over the Dallas Stars might have been it. The Ducks dominated early and held serve at home to take a 1-0 series lead, but the Stars shook off some early jitters and nearly clawed their way back from a four-goal deficit. They’re still in a hole, but by establishing their game over the final 25 minutes they proved that they belong in this series.

The end of the 2013-14 season is upon us. How has your favorite team fared? Below are grades for all 30 teams.

Note: Grades are primarily determined by performance relative to preseason expectations. They also take into account health-related issues, signings and trades made during the season and the impact of major offseason moves. Significant injuries to star players, especially those with multiyear implications, will be reflected in the grade and detailed in the accompanying explanations.

I handed out midseason grades in January. Those grades are included for reference.

Derek Carr thinks hes the best quarterback in 2014 NFL draft

The 2014 NFL draft quarterback class is one of the most intriguing groups of signal-callers in recent years, with no single player emerging from the group as the consensus best quarterback available.

Depending on who you ask, you will hear votes for Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel or Teddy Bridgewater, but one player outside of that group believes he is deserving of the No. 1 ranking.

Enter Fresno State’s Derek Carr.

USC named Cody Kessler their starting quarterback to start the 2014 season, Trojans head coach Steve Sarkisian said Tuesday.

Kessler beat out redshirt freshman Max Browne, who was the No. 1 quarterback in the country coming out of Skyline High School in Washington last year.

”I’m confident we can go out and win a lot of football games with Cody Kessler as our quarterback,” Sarkisian said.

Sarkisian also said that Kessler would be the starter if the team played a game this week and that every position is open to competition.

Kessler, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound junior, started all 14 games last season, throwing for 2,968 yards, completing 65 of his passes with 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions for the Trojans, who finished 10-4 after beating Fresno State 45–20 in the Las Vegas Bowl. Kessler threw for…

The New York Timesreleased an extensive report on Wednesday examining the Tallahassee Police Department’s handling of the investigation involving Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston. The Times, which contacted the TPD, the university, prosecutor Willie Meggs and attorneys for both Winston and the accuser, among others, found that the police department’s inquiry into rape allegations against Winston had some very fundamental flaws.

In fact, an examination by The New York Times has found that there was virtually no investigation at all, either by the police or the university.

The police did not follow the obvious leads that would have quickly identified the suspect as well as witnesses, one of whom videotaped part of the sexual encounter. After the accuser identified Mr. Winston as her assailant, the police did not even attempt to interview him for…
